Overview
A GMRS Hub is a GMRS radio linking network that allows for communication between different GMRS radios over an internet network. Setting up a GMRS Hub node using a Raspberry Pi involves configuring both hardware and software to establish a functional node in the GMRS Hub network.
Hardware Requirements
- Raspberry Pi:
- Model: Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 is recommended for better performance.
- Accessories: MicroSD card (16GB or larger), power supply, and case.
- Radio Interface:
- Interface Type: You need a compatible interface to connect your GMRS radio to the Raspberry Pi. This can be a sound card interface, USB radio interface, or a USB/Pi Hat Hotspot Radio.
- Examples of USB Interfaces: Repeater Builder Rim-Lite, Hotspot Radio's ARiUSB4.
- Examples of Hotspot Radios: Hotspot Radio's HotspotRadio PI Hat, Hotspot Radio-USB.
- GMRS Radio:
- Model: Any GMRS-compatible radio that can be connected to your interface. The radio must have the availability to be configured and wired to the interface. The minimum wiring required is COS, PTT, Ground, Audio in, and Audio out.
- Networking:
- Internet Connection: Required for connecting to the GMRS Hub network and for updates.
- Ethernet Cable/Wi-Fi: Depending on your network setup.
- Peripherals (Optional but recommended):
- Keyboard and Mouse: For initial setup.
- Monitor: For visual feedback during setup.
- Setup can be done via SSH Terminal when a network connection is available.
